Camping out at home

The house was liveable, in that it had a roof and was structurally sound, but for the first six weeks we washed in buckets of rainwater collected from the roof and used candles in the evenings. We had a gas stove which we’d inherited with the house and that came in handy not only for cooking but for heating water to wash in and for softening pipes when the drainage pipe broke and needed replacing.

The day the man of the house (who can make and fix just about anything) found an old submersible pump in the storage shed and decided to make us a shower was a great day. He rigged it up so that, after I had heated a large pan of water on the stove, we could stand under a showerhead and luxuriate in the modern life!
